I do IWAY when I'm bored and don't feel like actually having to do anything but bash someone in the head iwth an axe. Also I get some good fame from it since all the good groups are asking for Rank 6+ now =/

I mostly PvE, but I've been playing PvP for the past 2 days and started at 1 fame and got to 65 fame by mostly playing in random IWAY groups. The organized guilds w/teamspeak running IWAY did very very good, and I made it to HOH about 5-10 times. It still requires a certain level of skill to effectively run this type of group imo. The organized groups that call targets, rez quickly, and know the maps will be more successful. About 3 of the unorganized IWAY groups I got in didn't even make it past the ghosts, lol. I certainly don't think that IWAY is the best way by any means, but its a good start for a new PvP'r like me. Since I had more success in random IWAY groups I got a chance to learn some of the higher level maps that I wouldn't have been able to see with most other random groups. Since my guild doesn't really PvP, then I'm an outcast to most PvP'rs that are in PvP guilds. I don't want to join another guild, but I would at least like the chance to enjoy PvP and be successful. If anyone has another strategy to gaining experience, rank, fame, whatever, in a faster way then I would appreciate some input.

The problem with IWAY is that it's a perverse wheel.

New player comes to Tombs. He looks for a group, but since he doesn't have rank or isn't IWAY, he doesn't get picked. He goes into a blind invite PUG, starts and get killed by a IWAY team. He does not get any rank. He will get to be chosen by another blind invite PUG and lose again. He tries a new build, which is the best build ever. He does not get picked by any reasonnable group. He gets into a random PUG and dies anyways.
Making his own group won't help. Experienced players either play in balanced guild groups or in team builds PUGs. He gets some impatient people who spam "Go!" the very second the 8th player is in. He fails, he does not get rank.

See where I'm going? It never ends, unless you have a guild helping you, a lot of time on your hands to convince a good group you're worth it (or to convince good players) or you start playing IWAY (or other FotM).

It's not all powerful. I tried it with my (now deleted) warrior.
Got into a rank (somethingorother) group that were supposedly
'experts.'

Got paired up against a Ranger trap spike group.
The warriors kept running in, kept getting owned.

Of course, it's not all powerful. Yet it has more chances of working than a random PUG, which is almost always the best a character without rank and NOT playing IWAY will manage to get in.

Which means the IWAY will farm Fame by killing the above mentionned random PUGs, and that the non-IWAY player will gain fame at a ridiculously slow rate, which also means he will not be getting into better groups soon.

Playing the IWAY Build doesnt mean you will Win just because you have a Team Build such as that..IWAY,Trapper,Spike, and so many other Builds out have their highs and lows...It all depends on the players and how they coordinate with eachother...Ive seen IWAY team Own Trappers and Vise Versa...When it comes down to it...The main goal of Competition play is "Teamwork" then Build Structure...If you cant work as a Team then there is really no point in PvPing at all..Unless your just practicing and learning.

Wise words indeed. The problem is that teamplaying groups more often than not ask for a minimum rank, which the newcomer has not. The newcomer IWAY has the specificity of his build going for him... The lone e denial mesmer has what? The power of heart? (HEART!)

It's funny and really that that practically every single IWAY group doesn't run the most important skill in the build.

Our IWAY setup got nerfed in two ways though. The support guy was so much fun but he simply isn't viable anymore.

Most iway teams dont run the most important skill in the build? Im guessing nearly all IWAY teams run IWAY and Charm Animal and Res... Or are you talking about a skill more important then these 3?

He's probably talking about "Fear me".

I concur on one thing. IWAY gives a beginner a chance to win a few battles. Against other beginners for sure. Yet, do you guys know how hard life is for an unranked beginner in Tombs? Noone takes you without rank and a solid char build, except people like you that cannot even beat the unworthy. You don't really know all the skills and possible builds, since you're a beginner and you keep gathering loss after loss till you simply quit.

Then you can go with an unranked IWAY group. You win one game or two (a morale boost) then you get crushed by a balanced team. Here is where the difference starts. A person with good PvP potential will start to ask himself some questions: What were they running ? Why did we lose ? What skills were there ? He will also see different maps, learn different strategies, maybe learn basic concepts like TS and calling etc. Then he'll start reading forums, testing builds....etc. He will get converted into a potential good player, while without IWAY he would have had little chances.

IWAY is a good entry door for beginners. If they stick to IWAY ...too bad for them. But there will be some that will be able to go past IWAY and turn into the kind of player we want to see in Tombs.

Actually, I've seen several people set up a W/R with a pet and think that they have an IWAY build. I would bet that half of the new PvP'rs trying IWAY for the first time don't even know what IWAY stands for. This means they never put IWAY on there skill bar or maybe don't bring a pet because they don't know any better. I does take skill to run a successfully organized IWAY group that can get to HOH. The groups that ARE organized are usually in guilds with ts/vent and they know each other. Most of the random IWAY groups I have joined never ask you any questions and assume that you know what your doing because your profession is W/R.

An entry door, not a GOOD entry door, and to Guizzy's point, it's fast becoming (already become?) the ONLY door for beginners.

I PvE to unlock skills for PvP... I want the enjoyment of unlocking the skills rather than buying them with faction. I use faction to unlock runes/upgrades. I don't have a warrior or a necro that is ready for PvP, but I want to PvP. At the moment, unless I can find friends, the only way to get into a PUG for Tombs is IWAY.

This is not good.
